Two dog bites at GSP last night

Postby CraigWithaC » Fri Jun 15, 2012 10:24 am

There were two dog bites at GSP last night.

(1) The father of one of our lady players (on Birthday Party) was bitten by a dog.
I did not see it, but I was told the dog was on a long 15-foot chain near the field.

(2) One dog bit another dog's ear between field's 7 and 6.
Biting dog was medium-large, black, short hair, and I think had a chain-ey collar.
Bitten dog was small brown short hair, and cried loudly for a couple minutes afterward, clearly shaken.
We asked both teams on both adjacent fields whose dog it was, and nobody claimed it.
So, apparently this dog was just wandering around off-leash.

Obviously those dogs should not be back at an AFDC event.

It's important for people to understand that there's a difference between your dog being trained and obedient to you while you are around and a dog that is capable of being social when you go play 4 points in a row. I know we all love our pooches and want to get them out and bring them along but if you're pup can't behave when only moderately supervised then leave them at home. It's not a punishment to you or your dog to let them stay at home; it's acting with care and respect for your teammates, opponents, and the dog itself. I think the last thing anyone of us wants to do is report someone's dog for a bite and see something terrible happen as a result.

Not to mention it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Protect your friends, your self, and your dog; it takes time and patience for dogs to be social enough to be on the sideline.

Craig (or anyone else) with info on the owners of these two pups get in touch with any SC member; please.

I don't know the details of Dog 1 but Dog 2 was my dog. Not sure who was asking who about the owner but people definitely knew as Kerri (who is on Birthday Party) came and talked to me about it. I think Reggie is more widely known around summer league than I am.
I didn't see it happen but I talked to the owner of the small brown dog and he said his dog initiated it. He also told me that it was a nip and no skin was broken on the small dog, just a warning to quit doing whatever he was doing, which obviously worked. I can't remember the name of the other dog owner.
Please collect the facts before you report them.

This would be a good time for everyone to review the AFDC policies page. There is a section on pets

http://www.afdc.com/policies/

Pets

The AFDC has many members who are pet owners. If you decide to take your pet to a game please know you are responsible for the animal at all times. Please also be considerate to other players who may have different feelings/comfort levels with animals.

Yield to local city or field rules/signs.
Dogs should be leashed at all times.
Owners are required to pick up after their pet’s “business.”
Dogs should be tied up a safe distance away from the fields of play.
Dogs should be tied up a safe distance from players/bags on sidelines.
If your dog is aggressive, has a history of aggressive acts, or is easily irritated by new people and surroundings please leave them at home.
If your dog is going to be disruptive (incessantly bark, run on the field, use the field as a bathroom) please leave them at home.
It is your personal responsibility to use caution when approaching or interacting with a pet.

Please also care for your animals by providing them with cool, shaded areas to sit and lots of water to drink.
