Information on local pickup games

unicorn hunting

Postby CrazyEddy » Sun Jun 06, 2010 7:17 pm

So, does anyone have any first hand testimonies of playing pickup in Atlanta in recent history? With this information I might have an easier time finding a game.

Also, I think it might be about time to start anew that sticky thread at the top of this pickup forum. Most of those games don't happen. I know I'm not the only one who set aside time in his afternoon and drove a half hour to a vacant feild and got all mad and suff and then drove home. It's like totally not cool.

It seems like a problem might be that there are too many tentative pickup games and it gets spread so thin that we don't get enough numbers to get a game started at a lot of these. Maybe if we had a shorter list of games, we might get more conisistent pickup. Maybe, I guess.

The pickup list depends on the people at pickup games keeping it up to date. The AFDC does not and cannot be officially involved with pickup because we have no insurance for those games.

If someone goes and a game isn't happening, post on the pickup forum and ask what's up. If it's an old pickup game, or only runs certain times of the year, I can update the post even if it's not anonymous.

Also, it would be easy enough for someone to email or message the people who posted games to see if they are current. I'll be happy to edit and note games that no longer exist.

Super duper. Thanks Rick.

So, yeah, where have people played this past week? I can't say that I have tried too hard to find any of those piedmont park games for fear of driving a little far and trying to find parking, only to find no game, but it seems like one of those nights listed might get consistent numbers. And I can say that I've had terrible luck with the coan rec/middle school/dekalb memorial park game, even when I drive past all 3 since they're in close proximity.

I commend them and any other organizers for their efforts of trying to get a game going, but it's just tough to know who's gonna show up. It seems like the interweb is an excellent venue to set this up. The Sunday dekalb game has a yahoo groups thing, which is good, but is there any other internet service that has an RSVP function (besides facebook), where it's quick, direct, easy to do? Can our web designers build one into this website (with a disclaimer saying the AFDC is not involved in this at the bottom)?

The Monday Piedmont game had enough turnout tonight for two games - at peak, maybe 30 to 40 people. It may be a little lighter once Summer League is underway, but there should be plenty for at least one game.

Hi Keith,

I'm sorry you've had bad luck on the Sunday game. We've been bounced around a lot the last couple of years, and that makes it tough to keep the game going. We've had games occasionally this Spring, but it's been pretty hit-or-miss. Unfortunately, you've gotten too much "miss".

I try to make sure that all the requests and traffic is responded to within a couple of days, or, at the least, going into game day (time). And if I tell people that I think there'll be a game, I try to make sure no one is left standing out there. Last Sunday, there was no posts either the yahoo group or my email, so I wasn't really anticipating much of a game. I still drove by Dek. Memorial just to make sure, but I didn't see anyone and a good part of the field was occupied by a reunion/party/softball game (there was still enough room to play, but I didn't feel like dealing with it) so I bolted.

I'm playing league this summer (as are a number of our regulars), so the game may still be less-than-reliable, but there's good news on the horizon: we've gotten tentative permission to go back to Columbia Seminary, which was our home from 2001 to 2008. We're still working out some details, so don't just show up there until we finalize everything. As soon as I know more, I'll update here and the yahoo group.

In the meantime, both the Saturday morning/Monday evening games at Piedmont/Central Park and the Tues/Thurs games at Terrell Mill regularly get strong attendance. Meetup/Facebook groups for both are listed elsewhere in this forum and are reliable sources of information.

If you have any more questions or need any additional information, don't hesitate to email me. I'm happy to pass along whatever info I can.
Play hard, have fun.

What time is the Piedmont pickup game? I haven't been in a couple years. Used to be 6:30 on Oak Hill? I'm planning on swinging by tonight.

Game will be going shortly after 6 pm.
Look for us on the LOWER FIELDS for the first game, just over Oak Hill.
The second game will start around 6:30 or 6:45 on Oak Hill.

P.S. Bring extra water.

Does anyone know if the Coan Middle/Coan Rec game is happening this Sunday? And if so, a time and definite location?
