Wow, it is hard to believe this will be our 11th season of Saturday Summer League. Here's a bit of history:
'99 4 teams at Sequoyah
'00 4 teams at Walker
'01 5 teams at Coan Middle
'02 7 teams at YMCA Windsor Pkwy
'03 5 teams at Coan Rec/Toomer
'04 5 teams at MLK
'05 6 teams at MLK
'06 6 teams at MLK
'07 4 teams at MLK
'08 4 teams at Walker
So we bounced around there for a while before settling in at MLK, which was nice because it was one of the few locations where we could set up three fields to support six teams. But the conditions at MLK did worsen considerably, which is why I think we've seen the registration numbers drop. We certainly can't blame the rain -- rainouts have been rare over the years. The heat on the other hand...ouch. But, hey, that's Saturday League.
Since a lot of the city fields have been refurbished, we have some better options. I thought Walker was good last year, so we are planning to play there again this year. If we grow back to six teams, then we can always consider Grant, too.
Since the level of play is less competitive than weeknights, Saturdays are a good time to introduce beginners to the game or for pick-up players to introduce themselves to league play. That being said, the one downside can be the heat if attendance is an issue. Forcing beginners to play too many minutes in the heat can be a turn-off. So spread the word so we can get the registration numbers and attendance back up. And if you are waffling about coming out when you wake up Saturday morning, do come out (on time!) and support your team so low attendance doesn't become an issue.
Last year, despite having to overcome some attendance issues, the games were a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to another fun season.
Hope to see you out there!
-Matt
