A comment about contact

AFDC leagues are comprised of a wide range of player types. We have men and women of varying ages on the field at the same time. Those players all vary in athleticism and experience. Its a big melting pot. That is why I feel it is important to remind everyone of rule XVI.H

Fouls (II.E): It is the responsibility of all players to avoid contact in every way possible. Avoid contact in every way reasonable possible, while still playing Ultimate. Some contact is inevitable, but players have an affirmative obligation to make reasonable efforts to avoid contact.

Safety is paramount. We want to avoid injuries.

If your experience is mainly in open and you are playing in an AFDC league you need to adjust to playing with ladies. You need to make every effort to ensure your play doesn't hurt them or anyone else. Sometimes this means you don't get the D because you have to pull up. Or it means you can't lay out. The same goes for older or less athletic leaguers or minors. If you can do something to avoid contact you have to do it. Its your responsibility.

Having fun and not getting injured >>> making that play in a game on a week night.

Be aware that not everyone on the field plays at the same level and respect that.

I've always maintained; if the only way for you to get the disc is to initiate contact then it's not a play you should be making.

If the only way for you to get the disc is by making significant, non-incidental contact, it's a dangerous play and constitutes reckless disregard. That's unacceptable in a rec league. If you hear a captain or teammate telling the player to dispute the foul, please explain to them they are going to get someone hurt.

Talk to each other, too. Different players have different comfort levels. I rubbed shoulders with a player who was cutting on offense last night. He asked about it later and we discussed when a foul call would be appropriate. I appreciated that a lot.

Agree with the above, if you have to go through someone to make the play... Just don't. I realize there is a lot going on at the field at one time, and sometimes it's tough to keep track of where everyone is, but you need to make your best effort to be aware that you might be about to run someone over if your head is down or you are just looking up at the disc. I've seen way too many girls get run over just due to people not being aware of their surroundings. The thing that bugs me the most is seeing these plays and then the guy not reacting or not caring, as long as they caught the disc. Seriously?

We have enough issues getting girls to play without reckless players knocking them out or running them over. There is going to be the occasional incident where it's just wrong time, wrong place but the more we can look to avoid creating those instances, the better.

A good rule of thumb - If Rick's trying to rub shoulders with you, call a foul.

How does one nurse a bruise? You putting a bottle on it? A sippy cup?

Certainly not in public. There are laws against it.

Great point, thanks for stating...we all need to be aware of where we are at on the field...I've even called out 'be aware' when there is a potential collusion.

Tangent point to your point: I also think that we need to help educate some of the newer players that you are not supposed to put your arm on someone at anytime (I know this comes from playing basketball and I did the same thing when I started).
It is not dangerous, just really annoying and a foul...I have started to give one warning, and then just hitting the arm so it is no longer touching me (which is not the best spirit, but effective).

I really dislike it when people do what Joe is talking about. At least buy me a drink first.
